Mauritius, having strong telecommunication connectivity not only within the country but also through the state of art submersed fiber optic connectivity – the SAFE project, provides a high speed connectivity of up to 80 Gigabits. In line with all the required facilities, on the 18th August 2005, Clinique du Nord was the first healthcare setup in the private sector linked to Manipal Hospital at Bangalore to launch its telemedicine in Mauritius in 44 specialties. Manipal Hospital is one of the bigger corporate hospitals in the South of India.
Through the introduction of this telemedicine linkage between these two countries of almost same ethnicity, Mauritian patients are able to reap the benefits of Telecardiography and Teleradiology services. Patients who have been treated at Manipal are now getting easy, cheaper and quicker follow up advice from their doctors in Bangalore. Clinique du Nord has dissolved barriers such as distance, time, geography and cost of travelling to citizens of Mauritius for their treatment. It has increased the access and ease of health care especially for rural and underserved populations.
